Portable Network Graphics

I’m in the process of converting as many of this site’s GIF images as possible to PNG (or in some cases, JPEG). PNG images are generally smaller than GIF, and less controversial in the software world. Of course, this may cause problems if you have an older browser.

Here are the most popular browsers with PNG support:

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and up (though versions below 7 cannot handle multi-level transparency)
• Netscape Navigator 6 and up (4.04 added basic PNG support, but backgrounds are wrong on transparent images)
• Opera 3.51 and up
• Mozilla and its offshoots such as Firefox, Galeon, Camino and K-Meleon
• Konqueror (part of KDE, Linux-based but works on other Unix variants)
• Safari (Apple’s browser for Mac OS X)
