New Spring (Wheel of Time) Comics Finishing Soon
Thursday, November 12th, 2009 Posted in Comics, Sci-Fi/Fantasy | No Comments »
The long-delayed comic-book adaptation of New Spring may finally be coming to a close.
Since reading The Gathering Storm (which was very good), I’ve been saying that the previous book, Knife of Dreams, was the point where Robert Jordan finally got The Wheel of Time back on track. Thinking back, though, it was actually the expanded version of New Spring that got me excited about the series again after the dull, plodding Crossroads of Twilight.
Dabel Brothers started an 8-issue comic-book adaptation of the prequel back in 2005, published by Red Eagle Entertainment. It got off to a great start…until the studio and publisher started to feud, and the comics ceased publication entirely after #5 came out in early 2006.
Two years later (summer 2008), Dabel Brothers announced that they would start adapting the main Wheel of Time series, but at the time had no plans to complete New Spring. Finally, in April 2009, they announced that they’d be finishing the miniseries. #6 came out in May, as did the Eye of the World prologue, but #7 didn’t come out until August. It’s November now, with no sign of #8…or of Wheel of Time #2. Meanwhile, Bleeding Cool has been reporting financial problems — like not paying artists — and the Dabel Bros. website has gone offline.
It doesn’t sound promising…but there is some hope. I posted about several stalled comic miniseries at Speed Force, and Dabel Brothers’ Derek Ruiz* stopped in to comment:
NS #8 News coming soon. It’s complete and ready for printing. Once I have more to tell you on release date I’ll make my way back here. [emphasis added]
He didn’t mention Eye of the World, and I didn’t follow up. One thing at a time, after all!
As I understand it, Tor has the rights to publish the collected editions — and I suspect that’s where the main audience for this is going to be. If Dabel Brothers can ship the final issue of New Spring soon, Tor can have a hardcover in bookstores next year to tide fans over while they wait for Brandon Sanderson to finish Towers of Midnight.
*I don’t really have a way to verify it was him, but the email address does match a previous comment.
WoT Comics, SWHS, and a Mobile Alarm Clock
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 Posted in Comics, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Star Wars | No Comments »- Argh! Looks like the Wheel of Time comics are stalled again! # One issue left of New Spring, one issue into Eye of the World…
- And the award for Most Disturbing Use of an Alarm Clock in a Prime Time Show goes to… FlashForward! #
- XKCD on the Star Wars Holiday Special: True. Absolutely true. #
- Wish I knew what caused the Flickr spike yesterday. 71% of visits from “Unknown source,” but hits are spread around the usual con photos. #
- Oh, yeah: I got a weird kick out of recognizing that alarm clock on FlashForward as Clocky (before the disturbing part). #

Con Report: Long Beach Comic Con 2009
Sunday, October 4th, 2009 Posted in Comics | 9 Comments »
This Saturday I attended the first-ever Long Beach Comic Con. I had a great time catching panels, meeting writers and artists, talking about comics, sightseeing, and even breaking some Flash news. I can definitely see this as an annual event.
Note: If you just want to look at photos, feel free to skip to my Long Beach Comic Con 2009 photo set on Flickr.
Location
It’s been at least ten years since the last time I’d been to the Long Beach Convention Center*. I didn’t recognize the building the con was in at all (and I’m sure the shopping mall across the street wasn’t there before), though the facade and lobby reminded me a lot of the San Diego Convention Center with the arched ceiling and floor-to-roof windows. It made me wonder whether they had been designed by the same architect.
With a mall across the street to the west, Shoreline Village across a bridge to the south, and Downtown Long Beach across the street to the north — not to mention the food service in the lobby not being swamped — I really regretted having brought my lunch with me. Though it probably did save time, since I had panels I wanted to see from noon until 2:00. If I’d wanted to go to, say, the Auld Dubliner (right across the street! Auughh!), I would have only had about half an hour on the convention floor that morning.
*Not counting plays at the Terrace Theater. Though the last thing I saw there was a touring production of Miss Saigon in 2003, about two days before the start of the Iraq War. Talk about timing.
Main Hall
I think the main floor was about the same size as the floor at Wizard World Los Angeles the last couple of years — or rather, the amount of floor space they used was about the same. (Last year WWLA had a large empty space in the back.) Exhibitors were clustered around the entrance, mostly indie press (I remember Boom, Archaia, and Aspen) and a large Nintendo exhibit. The center of the room was dominated by the Artist’s Alley, with dealers wrapped around it and celebrities lining one wall.
In the back, inexplicably, was a raised wrestling ring. I didn’t notice it when I went through in the morning, but in the afternoon, when they were actually holding wrestling matches, it was loud! Halfway down the hall, you could hear the *smack!* *thud!* as the wrestlers threw each other to the floor. I figure the floor of the ring and the convention center floor must have made a fantastic sounding board!
I got in about 20 minutes after the con opened for the day, so if there were any huge lines I missed them. The artists’ tables were practically empty (they came in later), and most of the action seemed to be at the publishers’ booths and dealers. There was a big line for Jim Lee, and people were lining up for Stan Lee and Berkeley Breathed signings at 11:00.
Unlike San Diego, though, I could walk around without relying on Level 18 Crowd Weaving! Read the rest of this entry »

Wizard World LA & Long Beach: A Tale of Two Convention Centers
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 Posted in Comics | 1 Comment »So, a few years back (2004?), Wizard World Los Angeles launched at the Long Beach Convention Center. People liked it. After a couple of years it moved to the Los Angeles Convention Center. Consensus is that it went downhill (I only saw it after the move, in 2007 and 2008), and in fact the 2009 convention was abruptly canceled just two months before its scheduled date.
A group decided to step in and fill the void by launching the Long Beach Comic Con. The first convention is this weekend…at the Long Beach Convention Center.
Tonight I drove past a billboard and found out what’s going on this weekend at the LA Convention Center, where Wizard World would have been:
“Adultcon.”
Given some of the opinions I’ve seen expressed about Wizard, I suspect there will be people wondering, “What’s the difference?”

Bringing Back the 80s: Super Powers 25th
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 Posted in Comics | No Comments »
In 1984, Kenner launched a line of DC super-hero action figures under the name Super Powers. The toys were tied to the Super Friends cartoon, and each had an action: If you squeezed Superman’s legs, he would throw a punch. If you squeezed the Flash’s arms, he would run. Each figure also came with a 16-page minicomic starring the character and others from the toy line.
Today, Crisis on Earth-Blog unites fourteen sites in celebrating this landmark toy line.
- Aquaman Shrine dives with the King of the Seas.
- Bat-Blog covers Batman and his villains.
- Being Carter Hall handles Hawkman.
- Speed Force runs along with the Flash.
- Crimson Lightning is going all-out with a Flash extravaganza.
- Dispatches from the Arrow Cave aims at Green Arrow
- Love Dat Joker brings in the laughs with the Clown Prince of Crime
- Justice League Detroit follows a set of knock-off figures from the era.
- The Idol-Head of Diabolu has only begun to cover Martian Manhunter
- …nurgh… reviews the entire series of mini-comics
- Doom Patrol Blog takes a spin with Red Tornado
- Fortress of Baileytude – Superman
- Firestorm Fan follows the Nuclear Man.
- Once Upon A Geek covers Dr. Fate and the unproduced Blue Devil & Shockwave figures
- Update: Legion Omnicom has joined the event in with a page on Tyr.
Enjoy!

Kindle DX: A Digital Comics Platform?
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 Posted in Comics, Computers/Internet | 3 Comments »
Amazon has announced the Kindle DX, a new version of their e-book reader with a 9.7-inch screen. Unless I’ve got my numbers wrong, that makes it larger than the standard manga page, though not quite as big as the standard American comic book page. And it’s only 1/3 of an inch thick, comparable to a typical trade paperback.
This could be the first e-reader device suitable for simply taking comics formatted for the printed page and transferring them to a tablet. No need to break it down and show one panel at a time like most iPhone or Android comics. No need to zoom and pan. Just transfer the whole page.
Sure, it’s only black and white, but there are plenty of comics produced in B&W, or reformatted for printing in cheap collections like Marvel Essentials or DC’s Showcase Presents series.
Imagine 30 years of Justice League of America or Spider-Man in the space of the latest trade.
The only drawback is the steep price tag: at $489, I’m not picking one up anytime soon.
New Spring Returns, New Flu Begins
Thursday, April 30th, 2009 Posted in Comics, General | No Comments »Next for Geoff and Ethan: Vibe: Rebirth!
Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 Posted in Comics, Humor | No Comments »
Apparently preliminary buzz is so good on Flash: Rebirth that DC has already announced the next character getting the Rebirth treatment: Vibe from the 1980s “Detroit-era” Justice League.
From the first link, Dan Didio explains:
It was really a melding of events. First of all, with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern all leaving the Justice League, Dwayne McDuffie wanted to try and bring back some of the feel of the Detroit-era League. And what character is most associated with that League? Vibe! Plus we had some very positive fan response to his appearances in Trinity. And orders for Flash: Rebirth have been phenomenal. We want to strike while the iron is hot, so I asked Ethan if he’d be interested, and he just jumped at the opportunity. Literally, he jumped. I could hear the thump on the other end of the phone.
It makes sense in a twisted sort of way.
Update: This is, of course, an April Fool’s joke! Happy April 1, everyone!
Why Las Vegas is a BAD idea for Comic-Con
Monday, March 30th, 2009 Posted in Annoyances, Comic Con 2009, Comics, Entertainment, Travel | 8 Comments »It seems as though every year, around the time of hotel registration for Comic-Con International, people start clamoring for the con to move from San Diego to Las Vegas. More hotel rooms! A bigger convention center! Gambling! Strippers!
It makes me want to headdesk.

Now, I don’t hate Vegas. I’m not ZOMG in love with it, but I’ve been there more than once and I don’t think it should be removed from the face of the earth. What I believe about Vegas is that it is a law and a destination unto itself, and that everyone should be able to choose whether they go based on the merits of the place, not on the merits of what else might be going on there that isn’t a usual part of the location. Please keep this in mind as I present my list of Reasons Not to Move CCI to Las Vegas:
1. Weather. San Diego may be incredibly hot some years, but it’s coastal. There are breezes a lot of the time, and it’s often quite bearable. Vegas is inland desert and is 99% guaranteed to be nasty hot in July/August. Part of the crazy fun of CCI is seeing costumes on the street, which would become darn near impossible for a lot of people given the temperature.
2. Distance. I’m not talking about the distance for people to get there (though I will in a bit), but the distance between things. It can take over half an hour to get from the front door of one hotel to the front door of the next one over. In San Diego, it’s pretty easy to leave the convention center, go find food that’s not jacked up in price for an inferior product, and come back. In Vegas, unless you take the monorail, that’s a pipe dream, especially given that the convention center is off the Strip and not really near a lot of hotels. Keep reading for more.
