Ahh, yes. I've definitely experienced some of those "fun" detours. Sometimes they really ARE fun - and sometimes they're because I forgot to return settings to default status (like avoiding toll roads).

Hi,
There are plenty of well documented 'scenic routes' that Google maps and other Routefinder software have sent people on.

One of the best was that Microsoft Maps used to send you to France (over/under the English channel) to take you from one part of London to another.

Looks like things have improved a lot since then!

Nice! All we've got is the built-in GPS on the G1, which basically adds the ability to detect where you are to Google Maps. It sounds like it might be worth picking up something more elaborate, either a dedicated device or a more fully-featured app for the G1. There's one that either just came out or is getting ready for release, but I don't remember what the cost is (just that there's a subscription fee).

Funny story on Google Maps, though: There are two main ways you can get from Cambria/San Simeon to Monterey/Carmel. You can take Pacific Coast Highway along the coast, or you can head inland, over the coastal mountains, then take Highway 101 north, then cut back out to the coast.

A few weeks ago, when I was planning our route, I asked Google Maps for directions from San Simeon to Carmel. It sent me up the private road to Hearst Castle, then off onto another road through the hills in a national forest, then eventually back out to the coast near Carmel. It's fixed now.

Neat.

Regarding the trip planning (re: Google Maps) I thought you said something about having purchased a gps device. Those (even the traditional ones, from what I understand) allow one to plan gas and bathroom breaks, even layovers, into the overall plan. That can help with time and cost estimates.

In my case (I use software that goes on an 11-inch laptop) I can enter the size of the gas tank, the price of gas, the amount of time I want to travel, how much gas is in the tank when I start, etc.

Google Maps (overall) has the most accurate maps I've ever seen, so I certainly understand using its popularity - especially when one has a G1.
