Comic-Con Photos are Up (2011)

Cheetara and Snarf

(No, that’s not us.)

I’ve posted my 2011 San Diego Comic-Con photos at Flickr. Actually, they’ve been up for a week, but I was so focused on coverage at Speed Force (when I had time for blogging, anyway) that I forgot to post a notice here.

I’m still working on a con write-up. It’s going to be a lot shorter than last year’s extensive coverage, probably a single post, mainly because we were only there for one day this year.

Enjoy the photos, and check back for the write-up. I’m hoping to have it done by the end of the weekend. We’ll see how that goes. Update: It’s done! The write-up is online!.

Some sites I’ve linked to on Twitter, Facebook & Google+ over the past few weeks.

Comics

  • Girl Genius interview with Phil Foglio. Three more prose novels on their way, and Vol. 12 of the webcomic/graphic novels will “conclude the first half of the Girl Genius storyline,” after which the characters will start to travel beyond eastern Europa.
  • Muppet Lantern Corps
  • The Flash on a Segway at Comic-Con

Watching the Space Shuttle Land in 1988

The Shuttle!

When I was twelve, I went with my mom, brother and a family friend to see the Space Shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base. It was the first mission after the Challenger disaster, and the orbiter was Discovery.

I took a roll of slides using a manual SLR camera and (for the landing itself) a telephoto lens. With the last shuttle mission ending tomorrow, I decided to track down the slides and scan them. Continue reading

HP8

We caught the final Harry Potter movie on Sunday. It was an impressive finale to the series, and they clearly made the right decision in splitting the last book across two movies so they could actually put some weight behind the story instead of just running down the bullet points. That was one of the problems I had with the fifth and sixth films

Still, I’m most impressed that the movies finished, and didn’t stop partway through the series with dwindling budgets and audience interest. His Dark Materials couldn’t get past the first film, and based on the box office, it’s pretty clear that the current Narnia films aren’t going to continue beyond Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Eight movies over a decade, adapting a complete series, and going out with a bang? That’s an impressive feat right there!

SPAM SPAM SPAM CAR AND SPAM

I saw a license plate today that read,

I ♥ SPAM

I was a little surprised, but then I saw the “Made in Hawaii” plate holder and realized they were talking about the lunch meat.

*whew!*

Surprise

I’m shocked — SHOCKED that Kevin Spacey is playing a “psycho” in a new movie. I mean, who would have expected that?

Drop in Windows Web Browsing

From yesterday’s Google Analytics Benchmarking Newsletter, here’s a report on changes in global web traffic patterns:

Browsers and Operation Systems (OS) are identified by the “referrer” string sent by users’ browsers.

% Visits from OS 11/1/09 – 2/1/10 11/1/10 – 2/1/11 Difference
Windows 89.9% 84.8% -5.1%
Macintosh 4.5% 5.2% +0.7%
Linux 0.6% 0.7% +0.1%
Other 5% 9.3% +4.3%

That’s a huge drop in Windows, almost entirely matched by the rise in “Other.” Want to bet that “Other” has an awful lot of Android and iOS in it?
