I've been doing a lot of driving through north OC and southern LA county lately. Based on how Downtown LA looks from the top of the N-5/W-91 interchange bridge in Buena Park (about 20 miles closer in roughly a straight line), I'm going to revise my conclusion and go back to thinking this was Downtown Los Angeles. The buildings look markedly shorter even from that distance, and if there's a little haze, the US Bank tower fades before the Aon building does.

That makes sense.

I'd hoped to go back to that hill at lunch, or maybe out to another spot over in Lake Forest, and double-check things. Get the compass heading, for instance, or see if I could spot more buildings in that cluster, or another taller cluster to the right, not to mention comparing from a different angle. But there was so much more haze to the north by lunchtime that I figured I wouldn't be able to spot anything but the silhouettes of the mountains.

Oddly, it's still really clear here in central & south Orange County, and the haze is all up in LA (or maybe between here and there). I had a fantastic view of Saddleback and the nearby hills, but to the north everything looked brown.

I'm thinking Century City. You are missing way too many buildings for that to be downtown LA. And the haze here in downtown is indeed around.
