Understanding You
Harry Potter fanfic will be my downfall yet. I can't seem to stop reading the stuff, and the library is so big I despair of ever sufficiently catching up. I do plan to write some myself, but for now, other forms of expression are easier and faster. I wonder if this is the first official original filk based on a Schnoogle fic. Of course, I also wonder if anyone is willing to try to record it, since I'm obviously not a guy and as such can't sing like one. Until such time as there's some sort of recording, here are some guidelines for hearing it in your head.
Think of the feel of this song as a cross between Linkin Park's "Tried So Hard" and Paula Cole's "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" Parts marked "spoken" are spoken as in WHAtCG, possibly with melody overlaid as in that song. Parts marked "sung" are (duh) sung, preferably by a male singer with a slightly grainy voice as in the LP song. Under all is a strong beat and guitar/bass with hints of chorus melody in the spoken parts, also as with LP. It should be emphasized that the spoken parts are not rapped, just spoken softly with moderate import, rubato pacing, and clear enunciation.
Note to DD/DS/DV fans: I dunno about you, but the dragonhide leather outfit from DS says "rock star" to me. Though Cassie's skill at writing was undoubtedly the main reason I had very little trouble putting things into Draco's perspective for this piece, I won't deny that the leather may have helped.
Note to people who know me IRL: No, I haven't turned into a pro-Malfoy fangirl, just a story hanger-on. There's a difference, but if it bothers you, you should probably either skip this or try to pretend it's about nothing in particular.
And note from the nitpicky review reader in me: I hope this still applies after DV is finished, but if it doesn't, it's still good for the first two.
(spoken:)
I was the dark, you were the light
The outsides tricked unwary eyes
The bleeding left, the wounded right
Mix desperation and surprise
You look at me, perception fails
The blind spots twinned across the space
You know my heart, my bed of nails
I know the darkness that you face
(sung:)
I didn't want to know
I didn't want to know
I've been an enemy of life
I've been the opposite of you
I don't know me, although I find
I'm close to understanding you
(spoken:)
I run you down between the trees
I pick you up from off the floor
You feel my essence, my disease
But it can't hurt you anymore
I see you slip, I watch you fall
You never thought that I could care
You're pinned again against that wall
And it's my sword that holds you there
sung:
I never thought I'd know
I never thought I'd know
(chorus)
I've been the shadow carved in white
I've broken down and broken through
And now I know the reason why
I'm close to understanding you
(spoken:)
If there's a purpose, some design
That shapes this world we're living in
I wonder why this heart is mine
That doesn't fit inside my skin
The memories are fighting now
To close or open heavy doors
Something's changed, I don't know how
You've ruined me and I want more
I fell, you fell, we tumbled down
A pedestal from out of grace
We learn to be the selves we've found
And now we're in a different place
I feel it now, the way we're bound
A link in life, a bridge in fate
So leave the weapons on the ground
If you can't love then I can't hate
(sung:)
I never thought I'd know
Don't want to let it go
(chorus)
I've been the one behind it all
You've been the hero of the day
And now before we lose it all
There's one thing left I have to say
Don't ask me why I save your life
Don't ask me why I stand with you
Of all the things that we've survived
The best is understanding you
The best is understanding you
I think I'm understanding you
